Mental performance wasn’t invented for esports. It’s been around for way longer than this industry has been alive. The skills, tools, and strategies that come from sport psychology and mental performance can be applied to almost any setting. Whether it be sports, esports, music, business, or just everyday life, the usefulness of it is almost endless. While we’re learning about mental performance to amp up our game and climb in solo queue, how can we use it to get more out of life?

1. Planning and goal-setting.
When you’re trying to get better at a game, you HAVE to plan and you HAVE to know what your goals are. Otherwise you end up spinning in circles and stuck in the same gold rank you have been for 3 seasons.
The skill of planning and goal-setting is absolutely crucial to being successful in life as well. Whether it’s getting homework done, planning a trip with your friends, or getting into college to pursue your dream career, goal-setting is the best way to make it all come alive.
What’s more chaotic than the comms of a team going into a team fight? Honestly, nothing. It’s absolute chaos at times. If you’re able to learn how to relay exactly the right information, remain calm while doing it, and not flaming your teammates during that chaos, then I hate to break it to you but you just might be an effective communicator.
What does that do for you though? Well, whether you’re looking to convince your parents to go to a movie, negotiate for a raise in your career, or explain why you deserve a bonus point on your assignment to a teacher, you’re going to need good communication skills. Thankfully, gaming and esports are the perfect stomping grounds to practice it.
3. Handling failure.
How many times have you been grinding to rank up and you get stuck or fail to get promoted? How many times have you gone into a scrim or tourney and gotten absolutely blasted by a team worse than yours? How many times have you… well, I’ll just leave it there. My point is: as gamers, we experience failure constantly. And we deal with that failure by figuring out ways to beat it.
We use that failure as fuel. This skill doesn’t just stay with us in our game. If we work on our perseverance through the things that hold us back in gaming, it gives us a degree of resiliency and determination in everyday life. When people around you are giving up and complaining, you’ll be able to push forward.
Teams used to get away with building a roster around a single monster of a player and riding their skill to W’s. However, esports has gotten so competitive and intense that you need an entire team of beasts in order to claim titles.
Teamwork is one of the most brutal and grueling mental skills out there. Think of all the times you’ve seen duo’s in Fortnite crumble or a squad in CoD blow up or a team in League melt down. It’s constantly happening because teamwork is unbelievably difficult.
Learning to resolve conflicts, understand each other’s perspective, and build strong relationships is the foundation of teamwork. Building these foundations in with your team is a skill that will transfer to real-life as well. Work, school, friends, relationships. You can imagine all the scenarios that it’ll be helpful. Truthfully, if you get good at being a good teammate, people are going to line up to work with you.
5. Becoming happy.
Esports can quite literally be one of the most infuriating things in the world. RNG seems to always be against us and we hit a bunch of unlucky stretches.
Building up your mental skills and conditioning in gaming builds a buffer against the negative wave of emotions that comes after a bunch of bad RNG. If you can handle your team feeding, awful gear, bad drops, or whatever else your game can throw at you with a growth mindset, you’ll be able to handle some of the roughest things life can throw at you as well.
